Founded by David Koresh, a charismatic leader, the group gained significant attention and notoriety due to their controversial beliefs and the tragic events that unfolded at their compound in Waco, Texas in 1993.
The origins of the Branch Davidians can be traced back to the early 20th century when a Seventh-day Adventist preacher named Victor Houteff established the Davidian Seventh-day Adventist Church in Texas. Houteff believed that he was the fulfillment of biblical prophecies and that he had been appointed as the leader of the end-time remnant of God’s people. His teachings emphasized the imminent return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of a millennial kingdom on Earth.
David Koresh, born Vernon Howell, joined the Davidian community in the 1970s and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1983, he took over as the leader of the group, renaming it the Branch Davidians. Koresh claimed to be the Messiah and the Son of God, and he began to interpret biblical prophecies in a way that suggested the end of the world was imminent.
The Branch Davidians’ beliefs were a mix of Seventh-day Adventism, Christian Identity, and other esoteric teachings. They believed in a strict interpretation of the Bible, lived a communal lifestyle, and practiced polygamy. The group’s compound in Waco, Texas, became a self-sustaining community where members adhered to Koresh’s teachings and awaited the end of the world.
