How to Make an Espresso Shot in a French Press

Espresso, the concentrated form of coffee, is a beloved beverage among coffee enthusiasts. While traditional espresso machines are the go-to for making a perfect shot, not everyone has access to one. The good news is that you can still enjoy a rich and flavorful espresso shot using a French press. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make an espresso shot in a French press.

Ingredients:

  • Finely ground coffee beans (preferably freshly roasted)
  • Water (filtered or spring water for best results)
  • French press ( ideally with a 1 to 1.5 ratio of coffee to water)

Instructions:

  1. Start by heating the water to around 195°F (90°C). This is the ideal temperature for extracting the best flavors from the coffee beans.
  2. Grind your coffee beans to a fine consistency. The grind should be similar to table salt. If you don’t have a coffee grinder, pre-ground coffee can work, but it’s best to use freshly ground beans for the best flavor.
  3. Measure out the coffee grounds. For a 1 to 1.5 ratio, use 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water. Adjust the amount according to your taste preference.
  4. Preheat your French press by pouring hot water into it and swirling it around. Then discard the water to ensure the press is clean and hot.
  5. Transfer the coffee grounds into the French press. Pour the hot water over the grounds, ensuring that all the grounds are saturated.
  6. Let the coffee steep for about 30 seconds. This allows the grounds to bloom and release their flavors.
  7. After 30 seconds, stir the mixture gently to ensure even extraction.
  8. Allow the coffee to steep for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. The steeping time can vary depending on your taste preference and the strength of your coffee.
  9. Once the steeping time is complete, slowly press the plunger down to separate the grounds from the brewed coffee. Be gentle and press down slowly to avoid creating too much pressure, which can result in a bitter taste.
  10. Serve the espresso shot immediately. The flavor and aroma will diminish as the coffee cools down.

Enjoy your homemade espresso shot in a French press. You can use this base shot to create various coffee drinks, such as lattes, cappuccinos, or even a classic Americano.
